Why this book belongs in your classroom

Ambassador Ken Salazar’s memoir and call to action tells the story of 70 million Latinos in America. It speaks to four conversations every campus needs.

Immigration and the border

A grounded, human, policy-informed view of the border: not a crisis to be managed, but an opportunity not yet taken.

Cultural history and identity

The deep roots of Latino and Indigenous communities across the Southwest, and a history too often left out of the mainstream narrative.

Foreign relations

A reimagined partnership between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, built on shared prosperity. Essential for international relations and public policy.

The power of diversity

Diversity is America’s superpower, and Latinos are the foundation of the country’s economic and democratic future.

Founding institutional partner

Dr. Abel Chávez of Our Lady of the Lake University, the birthplace of HACU in 1986, joined the Book Match as a founding institutional partner when it launched at the HACU national webinar on October 15, 2026.

For donors

Give to the Fund.

Borderlands tells the story of Ken Salazar’s journey from the San Luis Valley to the U.S. Senate, the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. It makes the case that North America can be a unified economic and democratic powerhouse. The Fund turns charitable giving into books for the students and teachers who will carry that case forward.

  1. 1 · Give

Make a tax-deductible gift to the Fund at The Denver Foundation.

  2. 2 · Grant

Fund leadership recommends grants to qualified nonprofits, including American high schools, colleges, and universities.

  3. 3 · Distribute

Educational institutions order books through local community bookstores, college libraries, and national booksellers to get Borderlands to students and teachers in their communities.

Where the books go

The Fund is working through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, which represents more than 500 colleges and universities, to get Borderlands to students, teachers, and libraries across the United States.

High schools are part of the plan too, with the goal of reaching the 14 school districts of the San Luis Valley and the Denver Public Schools.
